THE CAROLINE HIRONS BOX OF DREAMS II

These days, taking good care of my skin has become a big part of my life, but this hasn't always been the case. I've always had fairly normal skin with barely any breakouts, so in the past, I've kind of just "winged it" with skin care. I even remember boasting in the past: “Oh, I don’t need any of that stuff, there’s nothing wrong with my skin”. Because my face seldom got dry, I barely ever even moisturised. I've since then realised that none of us can escape time (or gravity for that matter) and fast forward five years, I've noticed fine lines (and some not so fine) around my eyes, forehead and even an angry little wrinkle between my brows. I don't want to look way older than I am in another five years, so investing in skin care has become a way of looking healthier and more beautiful in the long run. There is, of course, other factors to consider - nutrition and exercise, for example - but it is skin care that I would like to focus on today.

Because of the reasons mentioned earlier, I decided to dabble in high end skin care and what better way to do it than to purchase the Caroline Hirons Box of Dreams II. If you don't know, Caroline Hirons is a renowned beautician whose recommendation often reach cult status. She has collaborated with the beauty retailer Cult Beauty several times to create an assortment of her favourite skin care items and they are often full-sizes. For a little math, this beauty box retailed for £195 and features seven items: the Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist (Full Size 30 ml - £15), May Lindstrom Cleansing Oil (Deluxe Size 30ml - £19.20), Sunday Riley Good Genes (Full Size 30ml – £85), Kypris 1000 Roses (Full Size 14ml – £86); Zelens 3t Complex (Full Size 50ml – £95), Bella Freud Loving Candle (One Size only – £40) and Therapie Equilibrium Bath and Shower Essence (One Size only – £40). The total value of the box is £381, so that makes the total about 50% cheaper than if you got everything separately. Since I was dying to try the Good Genes and Kypris oils anyway (and they pretty much make up the price in themselves), I wasn't hesitant in buying the full box.

I would like to put out a disclaimer, saying that I don't necessarily think good skin care = expensive skin care. I am not particularly wealthy and work just as hard as anyone else. Beauty is my hobby and just like a sportsman would purchase equipment or a bookworm would spend money on books, this is what I choose to buy. I am also not a specialised beautician and speak only of my own personal experiences (and what I've learned from the beauty community). Also, if there is an item here that is your holy grail, please don't be offended if I don't like it! There are as many opinions and experiences as there are people and we don't always have to agree on everything. I'm always open to discussion and comments. But,without further ado, let's get on to the products!

Ironically, the first item I'd like to talk about is the one I'm yet to use. The May Lindstrom Pendulum Potion is a face cleanser created with a myriad of oils (tamanu, camellia, macadamia, avocado, etc). Because of eyelash extensions, I've refrained from using oil cleansers (I love them, but they significantly reduce the amount of time the lashes stay on). This product promises to cleanse the skin, melt away make up and environmental debris and clear congestion and dullness. I always assumed you should use it as a normal cleanser (put on, rub, wash off), but after reading the instructions, I'm going to try to use it more like a spa ritual by massaging a small quantity into the face and using a warm towel to wipe it off. Conclusion: indecisive, not enough use.

Irooniliselt on esimene toode selline, mida ma pole jõudnud üldse kasutada. May Lindstromi Pendulum Potion on näopuhastustoode, milles peitub suur hulk erinevaid õlisid (näiteks tamanu pähkli, kameelia, makadaamia, avokaado jpt).
Next up is the Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist. Labeled as the Rolls-Royce of spritzes, this is a mineral-rich thermal water that is supposed to soothe and strenghten the complexion after cleansing. For me, facial mists are nice, but often feel like a gimmick. I love this for a quick pick-me-up, but haven't seen changes in my skin. The mist is really fine and I will definitely use this bottle up with love, but will probably not repurchase. Conclusion: will use, not repurchasing.

Järgmisena "näopihustite Rolls-Royce" - Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist.
Following with the Kypris Beauty Elixir I. Can we take a moment to appreciate this beautiful packaging? It looks like an ancient beauty potion. Each bottle contains a thousand roses and consists of the finest ingredients nature and science have to offer (Bulgarian rose, CoQ10, Vitamin C, etc). It's vegan, natural and organic, but doesn't compromise in results. It feels great on the skin, sinking in beautifully and leaving it plump, hydrated and glowing. You can use it day or night, but I definitely prefer using it at night (as with most of my skin care) just because I feel that way I get the most effective results. The bad part - it's expensive. Like really expensive (we're talking about €100 for 14 ml). Conclusion: I'm really torn! I really love it, but the price is astronomical. I would repurchase only if I saw a significant decline in the appearance of my skin after I stop using it.

Edasi Kypris Beauty Elixir I. Kas selle pakend pole mitte uskumatult elegantne? See meenutab mulle mingit iidset ilueliksiiri. See pisike pudel on tõesti, tõesti kallis (täishinnaga on 14 ml pudel 100€).
On to the main reason I purchased this box in the first place: the Sunday Riley Good Genes. I have to say, this little bottle does not dissapoint! It contains high-potency, purified grade lactic acid to plump lines and smooth the appearance of wrinkles. It clarifies, exfoliates and corrects uneven skin tone. Plumpness, radiance and even tone are some of the things I've noticed in my skin while using these products and I believe this is the reason. Conclusion: a definite repurchase!

Põhjus, miks selle karbi endale üldse soetasin, peitub siin: Sunday Riley Good Genes seerum. Sisaldades kõrgekvaliteetset, puhastatud piimhapet, lubab toode kortse siluda ja näonahka pringimaks muuta. Puhastab, koorib ning parandab ebaühtlast nahatooni. Kõige suuremad muutused minu nahas on olnud siledam, klaarim, pringim ja kumavam nahk ning usun, et see on üks neist põhjustest. Otsus: ostan kindlasti juurde.
Moving on to the Zelens 3t Complex Essential Anti-Aging Cream. Similarly to Good Genes, it promises to transform the appearance of dull, lined, aging complexion and restore youthful bounce and luminosity. Because I've only ever used these two together, it's hard for me to say whether it's this, the Good Genes or the combination of the two that is working so well for my skin. For that reason, I'm torn between two options again. Conclusion: repurchase if I see significant changes in skin's appearance.

Järgmisena tuleb jutuks Zelens 3t Complex Essential vananemisvastane kreem. Mul on mõneti raske eristada, milline toode on mu nahka aidanud (või kas kõige efektiivsem on nende kõikide väga kallis kombinatsioon). Olen mitu kuud koos kasutanud seda, Good Genes'i (ja tihti ka Kyprise õli) koos ja nii ei ole kindel, kas selle toote välja jätmine mu nahas muutuseid esile tooks. Otsus: ostan juurde, kui naha olukord oluliselt halvemaks muutub.
This wraps up the facial products. For body products there is the Therapie Equilibrium Bath & Shower Essence, which has been developed by an aromatherapist and boasts a myriad of exquisite spa-inspired aromas, such as neroli, jasmine and lavender. You can apply it on your body and shower it off or add a couple of capfuls to bathwater. I did the latter and was positively surprised that the scent had an immediate calming effect. It reminds me a lot of Aromatherapy Associates products. Again, I’m torn on the repurchasing bit, because I do love the scent, but there are so many bath oils I would like to try. Conclusion: not repurchasing, but maybe dabbling more in the brand.

And last but not least, the box features the Bella Freud Loving candle. Some people have complained this isn’t a skin care product, but I don’t actually mind it being in the box, per se. For me, it’s like a holistic journey – you light the candle, get in the bath with the oil and finish your skin care with the face products. Also, I would think they need to keep the costs down somehow – as only two or three products make up the price of the box. I was surprised to see this candle costs 45€ though and did not get on well with it. Scents, of course, are a very personal thing, but the tuberose in this is so overwhelming, it is to the point of nausea for me. I’m not one to get headaches from scents usually. Neither does the packaging really appeal to me – mostly because I don’t have anything red in my house, so it doesn’t really serve a purpose as a decorating object. A candle with a black or white design would’ve been a much safer option. Conclusion: no way, Jose.

These were all the items in the Caroline Hirons Box of Dreams II. I feel my repurchase decisions might have sounded a little too harsh since I do love this box to death and am so happy to use these products. Considering the Kypris Beauty Elixir (£86) and Zelens Anti-Aging Cream (£95) almost make up the value of the box by themselves, this is an insane bargain. While the Omorovicza Face Mist and Therapie Bath Oil are indulgences I will gladly use, I will not be buying these again. However, the combination of the Kypris Beauty Elixir, Sunday Riley Good Genes and Zelens Anti-Aging Cream have changed the way my skin looks and feels and I'll be definitely squeezing the lasts drops out of these when the time comes. Unfortunately, the box isn't available to purchase anymore, but if you are interested in any of the individual products, they are all on the Cult Beauty website and you can keep an eye on future collaborations there as well. I, for one, am so excited to be waking up with fresh beautiful skin (almost) every day. What are your favourite skin care products? Have you dabbled in expensive skin care and is it worth the price?

Samas on Kyprise näoõli, Sunday Riley Good Genes ja Zelensi vananemisvastane kreem mu naha olukorda oluliselt paremaks muutnud. Millised on teie lemmikud näohooldustooted?

  2. Everyone goes on about the Kypris oils! I didn't realise they were quite so horrifyingly expensive but these boxes from Cult Beauty are a great way of trying products you wouldn't usually have picked up :)

    1. I know, right! I was slapping that Kypris oil on my face like no tomorrow (I hadn't looked up the individual prices prior to writing this). I've since then taken a more sparing approach! :D

  3. Hey,
Lovely post. I think I agree with your overall feeling. The products are lovely but so expensive that I really don't think I can repurchase that many of them.

    1. Thank you for your reply! :) I feel the same. At least these types of boxes give us a chance to try things out without spending the full $$ :)
